Once upon a time...
The legend of the Berrega, also known as the Death's Whistle or Bird of Death, is a narrative rich in mystical and supernatural elements, rooted in the villages of the Peneda-Gerês National Park . This legend creates an atmosphere of mystery and respect for the forces that govern life and death. The story goes that the Berrega, a "supernatural" creature identical to a bird with very ugly, fiery eyes, would choose a place in the village to sing where someone was destined to die. It would chant its ominous song in a sad and sinister melody throughout the night, symbolizing not only the proximity of death but also a supernatural event known as the Accompaniment .

The Accompaniment was a supernatural procession that accompanied the souls of those about to leave this world. This mysterious entourage guided spirits beyond earthly life, acting as a bridge between the realms of life and death.

Berrega, as a central figure in the legend, became an ambivalent symbol. While representing the inevitability of death, it also personified that special connection between life and the afterlife. The story of Berrega served and continues to serve as a reminder to the local inhabitants of the importance of accepting the mysteries of existence with respect and humility.
Did you know that...
In the Peneda-Gerês National Park region, the fauna is incredibly rich, and the nocturnal ecosystem is composed of a wide variety of sounds from various animals. The Berrega, or Death Bird, was none other than one of the marvelous and beautiful nocturnal birds, such as the Eagle Owl, the Barn Owl, the Tawny Owl, the Little Owl, among others...
As for the myth of the fiery eyes, it originated from the reflection of light in the eyes of animals capable of seeing better at night, such as dogs and cats.
The barn owl ended up becoming a mystical and frightening figure due to its association with death; however, the owl is an animal that symbolizes wisdom.
