What to visit in Peneda?

Tibo Viewpoint
The first point of interest on the way to the village of Peneda is the Tibo viewpoint.
This viewpoint is one of the landmarks of the Peneda-Gerês National Park, offering fantastic views over the Lima Valley and the Peneda Valley.
Note: this viewpoint has 2 observation points separated by approximately 150m, allowing you to see the Peneda Valley to the North and the Lima Valley to the South.

Rouças Wintering Village
On the way to the village of Peneda, you will certainly pass through the winter pasture of Rouças.
The Inverneira de Rouças in the Peneda Valley is a village linked to the phenomenon of transhumance, where shepherds spent the winter in the valley sheltered from the cold, and in the summer they went up to the mountain pastures to enjoy the high-altitude pastures. As you can see in the image, it provides you with an authentic colorful postcard, to visualize and take away in the memory of your visit to Peneda.

Peneda Lagoon

Nowadays, besides being a place of rare beauty and peace, it is one of the stopping points for pilgrims to Our Lady of Peneda, and also a watering place for animals, namely, livestock grazing extensively.
Access is only possible on foot from the Sanctuary (4km), and requires physical fitness.

Gavieira Wintering Village
Inverneira da Gavieira is one of the villages in the Peneda Valley.
Its location on the mountainside, besides resembling a nativity scene, is an excellent reference to the mountain villages of the Peneda-Gerês National Park , characterized by their typical clustered construction, a behavior that attests well to the existence/descent of hillforts in this region.

São Bento do Cando
Branda de São Bento do Cando is a small village at a considerable altitude, linked to the phenomenon of transhumance (branda), in which shepherds from the winter pastures of Tibo, Rouças and Gavieira would move up in the summer to take advantage of the high-altitude pastures with their livestock.
In this small village, you will also find a beautiful little chapel that gives the village its name and is a place of pilgrimage: the Chapel of São Bento do Cando.

Cando Viewpoint
